Basic Concepts
Buoyancy force
The resultant force of pressure of a liquid or gas on a submerged body, directed upward.
The lower body is usually deeper and experiences more pressure, causing a net upward force.
Archimedes' Law
The buoyant force is equal to the weight of the liquid or gas in the volume of the immersed part of the body.
The force depends on the density of the medium, the acceleration of gravity and the displaced volume, but not on the depth in a homogeneous medium.
Buoyancy force measurement
The buoyancy force is found as the difference between the dynamometer readings in the air and when the body is immersed.
The experiment simultaneously shows a decrease in apparent weight and allows the result to be compared with the weight of the displaced fluid.
