Basic Concepts

3 concepts

Hydrostatic pressure

The pressure of a fluid at rest, created by the weight of the layers located above and increasing with depth.

At the same depth in a homogeneous liquid, the pressure is the same and does not depend on the shape of the vessel.

Communicating vessels

Vessels connected below free surfaces so that liquid can flow between them.

Levels of the same liquid are set at the same height if the pressure above both surfaces is the same.

Fluid pressure measurement

The pressure gauge compares the pressure with a reference value based on the difference in levels or deformation of the sensing element.

When the sensor is immersed deeper, the reading increases, which makes it possible to experimentally test the dependence of pressure on depth.

Physical quantities

2 quantities

depth

The vertical distance from the free surface of the liquid to a point.

Unit: meter ·

Liquid density

The mass of a unit volume of liquid creating pressure.

Unit: kilogram per cubic meter ·

Lesson formulas

1 formula

Hydrostatic pressure

The pressure of a liquid column is equal to the product of density, gravitational acceleration and depth.

Condition: Homogeneous fluid at rest; Only the pressure of its column is taken into account.
