Basic Concepts

2 concepts

Wave

Propagation of vibrations in space with energy transfer without transfer of matter as a whole.

Particles of the medium oscillate around their positions, and the shape of the disturbance and energy propagate over a distance.

Phase difference

A value indicating the shift of two vibrations relative to each other.

At zero phase difference, the oscillations proceed synchronously, and at a difference π they reach opposite states.

Physical quantities

4 quantities

Wave speed

Wave phase propagation speed.

Unit: meter per second ·

Speed of light in vacuum

The limiting speed of propagation of electromagnetic interaction.

Unit: meter per second ·

Phase difference

Phase shift of two oscillations.

Unit: radian ·

Stroke difference

The difference in distances traveled by the compared waves.

Unit: meter ·

Lesson formulas

4 formulas

Mechanical wave speed

The speed of a wave is equal to the product of wavelength and frequency.

Electromagnetic wave speed

In a vacuum, the length and frequency of light are related by the speed of light.

Phase difference and stroke difference

The phase difference is proportional to the path difference and inversely proportional to the wavelength.

Signal delay distance

The distance is equal to half the signal path there and back.
