Basic Concepts

3 concepts

Biological effects of radiation

Ionizing radiation damages molecules and cells, and the risk depends on the dose, type and conditions of exposure.

The protection combines reduced time, increased distance and a suitable shield without replacing dose control.

Thermonuclear reaction

Light nuclei combine to form a heavier nucleus, releasing energy at very high temperatures.

Fusion powers the stars; on Earth, a controlled reaction requires confinement of hot plasma.

Elementary particles and antiparticles

Elementary particles have no observable internal structure at the level under consideration, and antiparticles have opposite charges.

When a particle meets an antiparticle, annihilation is possible with the transformation of rest energy into other particles and radiation.

Physical quantities

1 magnitude

Irradiation time

Duration of exposure to ionizing radiation.
